SUMMARY:Sourdough Bagels
DESCRIPTION:About the Class\nWhether you’re looking to advance your baking skills or begin your sourdough journey\, join us for our Sourdough Bagel class to learn everything you need to know to make a delicious\, homemade bagel with naturally fermented sourdough starter. These chewy\, boiled bagels made in the class are just like the kind you’d find in a New York City deli. \nYou do not need to be a sourdough connoisseur to take this class. We will go over a full introduction to using sourdough starter before we begin an interactive\, step-by-step demonstration of making the sourdough bagels. \nSourdough starter\, which is a natural type of yeast\, is often more digestible than gluten products made with a commercially manufactured yeast. Although it is not gluten-free (and therefore not safe for people with Celiac disease)\, sourdough is a great option for those who are gluten intolerant or for those who simply want to make healthier choices and eat foods with more flavor. \nAttendees will receive a printed recipe card and a “Sourdough 101” booklet. Sourdough starter kits will be available for purchase after the class with cash or Venmo\, in addition to a limited number of fresh\, ready-to-eat sourdough bagels. Bring your own pen and paper if you wish to take notes. \nSee you soon\, and happy baking! \n-Emilie (the home baker) & Louis (the sourdough starter) \n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Facilitator\n \nEmilie is a self-proclaimed sourdough addict. After falling in love with the concept of “slow food” during the pandemic\, she adopted a sourdough starter named “Louis” and now uses it in all her baking. A few years into her sourdough journey\, Emilie started her own small business\, Traveling Sourdough Starter\, in an effort to spread the joy of sourdough baking and share her sourdough experiments online. Through TSS\, Emilie also sells sourdough baked goods and starter kits at farmers markets and teaches classes on sourdough baking. \n“Traveling” is an important part of the business name\, as Louis goes just about anywhere Emilie goes. So far\, Louis has traveled with Emilie to three continents (and counting!) and across the nation. Louis has joined Emilie on a thru hike on the Pacific Crest Trail\, and most recently became the passenger princess on an 8\,000+ mile road trip around the coast of Australia. \nWhen she’s not baking\, Emilie is most likely in the wilderness on some kind of outdoor adventure. She lives a pretty nomadic life\, but at the moment is happily calling Chattanooga home. \n———- \n\nPlease email education@crabtreefarms.org if you have any questions.  \n\n\nPlease Note: Sometimes\, we don’t make the ticket minimum\, therefore\, we have to reschedule the class or cancel. SUMMARY:Meet the Microorganisms
DESCRIPTION:What you’ll learn! \nJoin Alter Eco Farms as we dive deep into the microscope to learn about all of the microorganisms that live beyond our vision\, in the soil. We will discuss common categories of soil microorganisms\, learning about their identification and function. We will learn about how microorganisms naturally create nutrient cycling for plants and the many other benefits the baby microbes provide. \nWe will look at several samples under the microscope (projected on the big screen so that everyone can see) and compare different samples from our area to draw some conclusions about the state of soil in the south. Once we’ve gotten attached to our cute and very helpful microscopic friends\, we will talk about what exactly happened to all the microbes and how we can work to get them back and restore the nutrient balance of our soils. \nMeet your instructor! \nKrisi Olivero is a biological soil specialist based in Chattanooga\, TN. She co owns Alter Eco Farms\, the only current distributor of live native microorganism amendments in the greater Chattanooga area. She is passionate about regenerating soils and encouraging people to grow. She trained with Dr. Elaine Ingham’s Soil Food Web School. \n \n\nPlease email education@crabtreefarms.org if you have any questions.  \n\n\nPlease Note: Sometimes\, we don’t make the ticket minimum\, therefore\, we have to reschedule the class or cancel. Please check your email and spam folder 48 hours before scheduled class to see if there has been a change. SUMMARY:Crabtree Farms + Wild Ones Community Book Club - "The Home Place"
DESCRIPTION:Overview\nThe Crabtree Farms Community Book Club is a monthly gathering designed to foster thoughtful conversation around food\, land\, sustainability\, health\, and community. This program will expand Crabtree’s educational offerings by creating a reflective and relational space that complements hands-on workshops and farm-based growing and learning. \nThe book club will provide an accessible\, welcoming environment for participants to engage with meaningful literature while connecting more deeply to the mission and work of the farm. \nSeptember 22: The Home Place: Memoirs of a Colored Man’s Love Affair with Nature\nDating back to slavery\, Edgefield County\, South Carolina\, a place “easy to pass by on the way somewhere else\,” has been home to generations of Lanhams. In The Home Place\, readers meet these extraordinary people\, including Drew himself\, who over the course of the 1970s falls in love with the natural world around him. As his passion takes flight\, however\, he begins to ask what it means to be “the rare bird\, the oddity.” By turns angry\, funny\, elegiac\, and heartbreaking\, The Home Place is a remarkable meditation on nature and belonging\, at once a deeply moving memoir and riveting exploration of the contradictions of Black identity in the rural South and in America today. \nSchedule\nMeeting Time: Tuesday\, September 22\, 6-7:30 PM \nFormat (2 Hours)\n• 5 minutes – Arrival & light refreshments (optional tea or seasonal farm sampling)\n• 90 minutes – Guided discussion\n• 15 minutes – Reflection activity or connection to the farm\n• 10 minutes – Closing and preview of next month’s book \nParticipants must register monthly up to a week before the start date of the book club. \nThemes & Reading Plan:\nThe club will rotate themes to maintain variety and seasonal relevance. \nBooks available via the Chattanooga Public Library: https://catalog.chattlibrary.org/GroupedWork/24596cdb-7756-013f-7cb5-4b3574fde7e5-eng/HomesearchId=8304868&recordIndex=1&page=1&searchSource=local&referred=resultIndex. \nThis title can also be purchased at: https://milkweed.org/book/the-home-place \nCrabtree Farms Community Book Club members receive 15% off their order at Book & Cover by using the discount code CURIOUSCRB on their website: https://thebookandcover.com/. Books purchased are for in-store pickup. \nAbout the Facilitator\nRogelio Cerezo serves as Director of Development and Administration at Crabtree Farms\, where he supports the organization’s growth\, partnerships\, and community engagement. Rogelio has a passion for bringing people together through conversation and shared learning. An avid reader\, he enjoys books that explore food\, nature\, culture\, and community. Some of his happiest memories involve time spent in his family’s farm and in the gardens of different relatives\, these experiences continue to shape his appreciation for the land and the stories that connect us to it. He’s excited to create a welcoming space for thoughtful discussion and connection through the Crabtree Farms Community Book Club. \nWild Ones promotes native landscapes through education\, advocacy\, and collaborative action. We inspire change through shared core values: Respect is at the heart of Wild Ones. We have respect for each other\, for nature and for the earth. We’re an inclusive community. SUMMARY:Crabtree Farms Community Book Club - "The Accidental Ecosystem: People and Wildlife in American Cities"
\nOctober 14: The Accidental Ecosystem: People and Wildlife in American Cities\nThe Accidental Ecosystem tells the story of how cities across the United States went from having little wildlife to filling\, dramatically and unexpectedly\, with wild creatures. Today\, many of these cities have more wild animals living in them than at any time in at least the past 150 years. Why have so many cities\, the most artificial and human-dominated of all Earth’s ecosystems\, grown rich with wildlife\, even as wildlife has declined in most of the rest of the world? And what does this paradox mean for people\, wildlife\, and nature on our increasingly urban planet? The Accidental Ecosystem is the first book to explain this phenomenon from a deep historical perspective\, focusing on a broad range of species and cities. Digging into the natural history of cities and unpacking our conception of what it means to be wild\, this book provides fascinating context for why animals are thriving more in cities than outside of them. \nSchedule\nMeeting Time: Wednesday\, October 14\, 5:30-7:30 PM \nFormat (2 Hours)\n• 5 minutes – Arrival & light refreshments (optional tea or seasonal farm sampling)\n• 90 minutes – Guided discussion\n• 15 minutes – Reflection activity or connection to the farm\n• 10 minutes – Closing and preview of next month’s book \nParticipants must register monthly up to a week before the start date of the book club. \nThemes & Reading Plan:\nThe club will rotate themes to maintain variety and seasonal relevance. \nBooks available via the Chattanooga Public Library: https://catalog.chattlibrary.org/GroupedWork/24596cdb-7756-013f-7cb5-4b3574fde7e5-eng/HomesearchId=8304868&recordIndex=1&page=1&searchSource=local&referred=resultIndex. \nCrabtree Farms Community Book Club members receive 15% off their order at Book & Cover by using the discount code CURIOUSCRB on their website: https://thebookandcover.com/. SUMMARY:Crabtree Farms Community Book Club - "Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom\, Scientific Knowledge and the Teachings of Plants"
DESCRIPTION:Overview\nThe Crabtree Farms Community Book Club is a monthly gathering designed to foster thoughtful conversation around food\, land\, sustainability\, health\, and community. As a Potawatomi woman\, she learned from elders\, family\, and history that the Potawatomi\, as well as a majority of other cultures indigenous to this land\, consider plants and animals to be our oldest teachers. In Braiding Sweetgrass\, Kimmerer circles toward a central argument: The awakening of a wider ecological consciousness requires the acknowledgement and celebration of our reciprocal relationship with the world. Once we begin to listen for the languages of other beings\, we can begin to understand the innumerable life-giving gifts the world provides us and learn to offer our thanks\, our care\, and our own gifts in return. \nSchedule\nFrequency: Once per month\nStart Date: May 2026\nMeeting Time: First Wednesday of each month\, 5:30-7:30 PM \nFormat (2 Hours)\n• 5 minutes – Arrival & light refreshments (optional tea or seasonal farm sampling)\n• 90 minutes – Guided discussion\n• 15 minutes – Reflection activity or connection to the farm\n• 10 minutes – Closing and preview of next month’s book \nParticipants must register monthly up to a week before the start date of the book club.
\n \n\nPlease contact Chloe Watts at 423-493-9155 or email: cwatts@crabtreefarms.org if you have any questions.  \n\n\nPlease Note: Sometimes\, we don’t make the ticket minimum\, therefore\, we have to reschedule the class or cancel. Rosalie Iron Wing has grown up in the woods with her father\, Ray\, a former science teacher who tells her stories of plants\, of the stars\, of the origins of the Dakota people. Until\, one morning\, Ray doesn’t return from checking his traps. Told she has no family\, Rosalie is sent to live with a foster family in nearby Mankato\, where the reserved\, bookish teenager meets rebellious Gaby Makespeace\, in a friendship that transcends the damaged legacies they’ve inherited. \nOn a winter’s day many years later\, Rosalie returns to her childhood home. A widow and mother\, she has spent the previous two decades on her white husband’s farm\, finding solace in her garden even as the farm is threatened first by drought and then by a predatory chemical company. Now\, grieving\, Rosalie begins to confront the past\, on a search for family\, identity\, and a community where she can finally belong. In the process\, she learns what it means to be descended from women with souls of iron\, women who have protected their families\, their traditions\, and a precious cache of seeds through generations of hardship and loss\, through war and the insidious trauma of boarding schools. \nWeaving together the voices of four women\, The Seed Keeper is a beautifully told story of reawakening\, of remembering our original relationship to the seeds and\, through them\, to our ancestors. \n**NO BOOK CLUB IN JANUARY** \nSchedule\nFrequency: Once per month\nStart Date: May 2026\nMeeting Time: First Wednesday of each month\, 5:30-7:30 PM \nFormat (2 Hours)\n• 5 minutes – Arrival & light refreshments (optional tea or seasonal farm sampling)\n• 90 minutes – Guided discussion\n• 15 minutes – Reflection activity or connection to the farm\n• 10 minutes – Closing and preview of next month’s book \nParticipants must register monthly up to a week before the start date of the book club. SUMMARY:Nature as Teacher: A Mindfulness Practice
DESCRIPTION:Cultivate a naturally calm mind and rooted presence in 2026 with nature-based mindfulness meditation at Crabtree Farms. \nThis monthly meditation group invites you to slow down\, listen deeply\, and reconnect with the living cycles of the natural world. Through gentle guided meditation\, mindful walking\, and quiet reflection—indoors and outdoors\, weather permitting—we will practice presence with plants\, soil\, weather\, and our own bodies as trusted teachers. \nAll are welcome. No meditation or nature experience is needed. Each gathering offers a spacious\, grounding reset and a chance to build a steady relationship with nature as a source of insight\, resilience\, and care. The meditations are offered freely\, and donations are gladly accepted to support Crabtree Farms and the meditation teacher. \nNature-Based Mindfulness Meditation is led by Holli Richey\, an Eco therapist and nature-based meditation practitioner who is a Certified Mindfulness Meditation Teacher mentored by Tara Brach\, Jack Kornfield and Susan Reviere of Atlanta Insight Meditation. \nBook online now!
