SUMMARY:Crabtree Farms Community Book Club - "The Accidental Ecosystem: People and Wildlife in American Cities"
DESCRIPTION:Overview\nThe Crabtree Farms Community Book Club is a monthly gathering designed to foster thoughtful conversation around food\, land\, sustainability\, health\, and community. This program will expand Crabtree’s educational offerings by creating a reflective and relational space that complements hands-on workshops and farm-based growing and learning. \nThe book club will provide an accessible\, welcoming environment for participants to engage with meaningful literature while connecting more deeply to the mission and work of the farm. \nOctober 14: The Accidental Ecosystem: People and Wildlife in American Cities\nThe Accidental Ecosystem tells the story of how cities across the United States went from having little wildlife to filling\, dramatically and unexpectedly\, with wild creatures. Today\, many of these cities have more wild animals living in them than at any time in at least the past 150 years. Why have so many cities\, the most artificial and human-dominated of all Earth’s ecosystems\, grown rich with wildlife\, even as wildlife has declined in most of the rest of the world? And what does this paradox mean for people\, wildlife\, and nature on our increasingly urban planet? The Accidental Ecosystem is the first book to explain this phenomenon from a deep historical perspective\, focusing on a broad range of species and cities. Digging into the natural history of cities and unpacking our conception of what it means to be wild\, this book provides fascinating context for why animals are thriving more in cities than outside of them. \nSchedule\nMeeting Time: Wednesday\, October 14\, 5:30-7:30 PM \nFormat (2 Hours)\n• 5 minutes – Arrival & light refreshments (optional tea or seasonal farm sampling)\n• 90 minutes – Guided discussion\n• 15 minutes – Reflection activity or connection to the farm\n• 10 minutes – Closing and preview of next month’s book \nParticipants must register monthly up to a week before the start date of the book club. \nThemes & Reading Plan:\nThe club will rotate themes to maintain variety and seasonal relevance. \nBooks available via the Chattanooga Public Library: https://catalog.chattlibrary.org/GroupedWork/24596cdb-7756-013f-7cb5-4b3574fde7e5-eng/HomesearchId=8304868&recordIndex=1&page=1&searchSource=local&referred=resultIndex. \nCrabtree Farms Community Book Club members receive 15% off their order at Book & Cover by using the discount code CURIOUSCRB on their website: https://thebookandcover.com/. As a Potawatomi woman\, she learned from elders\, family\, and history that the Potawatomi\, as well as a majority of other cultures indigenous to this land\, consider plants and animals to be our oldest teachers. In Braiding Sweetgrass\, Kimmerer circles toward a central argument: The awakening of a wider ecological consciousness requires the acknowledgement and celebration of our reciprocal relationship with the world. Once we begin to listen for the languages of other beings\, we can begin to understand the innumerable life-giving gifts the world provides us and learn to offer our thanks\, our care\, and our own gifts in return. \nSchedule\nFrequency: Once per month\nStart Date: May 2026\nMeeting Time: First Wednesday of each month\, 5:30-7:30 PM \nFormat (2 Hours)\n• 5 minutes – Arrival & light refreshments (optional tea or seasonal farm sampling)\n• 90 minutes – Guided discussion\n• 15 minutes – Reflection activity or connection to the farm\n• 10 minutes – Closing and preview of next month’s book \nParticipants must register monthly up to a week before the start date of the book club. SUMMARY:Crabtree Farms Community Book Club - "The Seed Keeper: A Novel"
\nDecember 02: The Seed Keeper: A Novel\nA haunting novel spanning several generations\, The Seed Keeper follows a Dakota family’s struggle to preserve their way of life\, and their sacrifices to protect what matters most. Rosalie Iron Wing has grown up in the woods with her father\, Ray\, a former science teacher who tells her stories of plants\, of the stars\, of the origins of the Dakota people. Until\, one morning\, Ray doesn’t return from checking his traps. Told she has no family\, Rosalie is sent to live with a foster family in nearby Mankato\, where the reserved\, bookish teenager meets rebellious Gaby Makespeace\, in a friendship that transcends the damaged legacies they’ve inherited. \nOn a winter’s day many years later\, Rosalie returns to her childhood home. A widow and mother\, she has spent the previous two decades on her white husband’s farm\, finding solace in her garden even as the farm is threatened first by drought and then by a predatory chemical company. Now\, grieving\, Rosalie begins to confront the past\, on a search for family\, identity\, and a community where she can finally belong. In the process\, she learns what it means to be descended from women with souls of iron\, women who have protected their families\, their traditions\, and a precious cache of seeds through generations of hardship and loss\, through war and the insidious trauma of boarding schools. \nWeaving together the voices of four women\, The Seed Keeper is a beautifully told story of reawakening\, of remembering our original relationship to the seeds and\, through them\, to our ancestors. \n**NO BOOK CLUB IN JANUARY** \nSchedule\nFrequency: Once per month\nStart Date: May 2026\nMeeting Time: First Wednesday of each month\, 5:30-7:30 PM \nFormat (2 Hours)\n• 5 minutes – Arrival & light refreshments (optional tea or seasonal farm sampling)\n• 90 minutes – Guided discussion\n• 15 minutes – Reflection activity or connection to the farm\n• 10 minutes – Closing and preview of next month’s book \nParticipants must register monthly up to a week before the start date of the book club. SUMMARY:Nature as Teacher: A Mindfulness Practice
DESCRIPTION:Cultivate a naturally calm mind and rooted presence in 2026 with nature-based mindfulness meditation at Crabtree Farms. \nThis monthly meditation group invites you to slow down\, listen deeply\, and reconnect with the living cycles of the natural world. Through gentle guided meditation\, mindful walking\, and quiet reflection—indoors and outdoors\, weather permitting—we will practice presence with plants\, soil\, weather\, and our own bodies as trusted teachers. \nAll are welcome. No meditation or nature experience is needed. Each gathering offers a spacious\, grounding reset and a chance to build a steady relationship with nature as a source of insight\, resilience\, and care. The meditations are offered freely\, and donations are gladly accepted to support Crabtree Farms and the meditation teacher. \nNature-Based Mindfulness Meditation is led by Holli Richey\, an Eco therapist and nature-based meditation practitioner who is a Certified Mindfulness Meditation Teacher mentored by Tara Brach\, Jack Kornfield and Susan Reviere of Atlanta Insight Meditation. \nBook online now!
